The Cyrus Frame: Why 'Bibi Has Dirt on Trump' Is the Wrong Question

Most American commentary on the US–Israel relationship orbits a single magnetic question: does Netanyahu have something on Trump? It is the wrong question. It is unfalsifiable, ethno-essentialist by default, and it has produced years of bad analysis on both flanks of US politics. The billboard, and the artifact behind it, points at the right question instead.

The wrong lever

The “Bibi has dirt on Trump” frame is sticky for a reason: it explains a striking alignment of policy without requiring the framer to engage with any ideological content. It is a black box. Anything Trump does that benefits the Israeli state-religious right gets routed back through the same hidden mechanism — kompromat — without ever being tested.

It is also, on inspection, ethno-essentialist. It treats the Israeli prime minister as a sui generis manipulator operating on a uniquely American mark, rather than as a politician operating inside a documented religious-political framework with American partners who hold the same theology and want the same outcomes. The frame collapses the actual ideological machinery into a personal blackmail folder. That is a comfortable explanation. It is not a useful one.

The right lever

The Tel Aviv billboard names it openly: Cyrus. Not as insult, not as code — as celebration.

The reference is to Isaiah 45, where the Persian king Cyrus the Great (c. 539 BCE) is the only gentile ruler in the Tanakh explicitly called mashiach — anointed. In the prophetic narrative, Cyrus liberates the Jews from Babylonian exile and authorizes the rebuilding of the Temple. He is not a Jew. He is a foreign ruler whose foreign policy serves a sacred restoration. That is the template.

The Trump-as-Cyrus reading is not fringe speculation imposed from the outside. It is a framework that Israeli religious-right institutions and American Christian Zionist infrastructure have actively published, minted, and broadcast. Receipts:

1. The Sanhedrin “Temple Coin” (2018)

In early 2018, the reconstituted Israeli Sanhedrin — together with the Mikdash Educational Center and the Bnei Cyrus Project — minted a commemorative half-shekel “Temple Coin” with Donald Trump’s profile on one side and Cyrus the Great’s on the other. The coin was struck to celebrate the Trump administration’s December 2017 recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and the embassy move that followed in May 2018. The Sanhedrin’s public statement explicitly framed Trump’s executive order as a contemporary parallel to Cyrus’s Edict.

This is not a meme. It is a physical artifact, mass-produced, photographed, archived, and sold. The institution that struck it does not consider the Cyrus parallel metaphorical.

2. The evangelical infrastructure

On the American side, Pastor Mike Evans, founder of the Friends of Zion Museum in Jerusalem and a long-standing Trump confidant, pushed the Cyrus framing aggressively across evangelical broadcast channels from 2017 through 2020. The argument was simple and explicit: Trump is the modern Cyrus, the gentile ruler chosen to restore Israel to its prophetic destiny. Evans wrote, spoke, and fundraised inside that frame. He was not freelancing — the message was coordinated with a broad coalition of US Christian Zionist organizations whose theological commitments long predate Trump’s political career.

3. The billboards

The Tel Aviv billboard genre that prompted this article is not a one-off. Mikdash Educational Center and adjacent Temple Movement organizations have erected variants of this billboard repeatedly since 2018. The genre is documented. The specific board photographed at the top of this piece was posted by @WeAreNotGTM on May 11, 2026, with the caption “This is Tel Aviv, Israel.” Single-source on the X-side attribution, but the imagery — US/Israeli flags, Trump in a praying pose, the explicit Cyrus invocation — sits cleanly inside the documented Mikdash / Cry For Zion / Temple Movement billboard genre.

4. The policy outputs

If the Cyrus frame were just rhetoric, the policy ledger would not match. It does:

• Jerusalem embassy — recognition December 2017, embassy opened May 2018. The exact act that prompted the Sanhedrin coin.
• Golan Heights recognition — March 2019, US recognized Israeli sovereignty over Golan, reversing decades of US policy.
• Abraham Accords — September 2020, normalization with UAE / Bahrain / later Morocco / Sudan, framed in administration messaging in explicitly religious-historical language.
• Iran posture, second term — current US policy toward Iran (active in 2026) tracks the threat-doctrine of the Israeli religious right with unusually high fidelity.

That is not a list of outcomes that requires blackmail to explain. It is a list of outcomes that follows directly from a US administration whose foreign-policy operating system shares a theology with a specific Israeli political-religious coalition. The Cyrus frame predicts those outputs. The kompromat frame is silent on why those outputs and not others.

What the Epstein corpus says (and doesn’t)

If “Bibi has dirt on Trump” were the load-bearing mechanism — and if that mechanism ran through Jeffrey Epstein, as the long-form version of the frame often implies — the November 2025 DOJ document release would be the place to find it. It isn’t there.

A structured search of the released emails (House Oversight, ~26K documents) maps the actual Israeli-political traffic in the Epstein circle:

• Ehud Barak is the densely-corresponding Israeli politician in the corpus. Dozens of threads routed through Lesley Groff (Epstein’s longtime assistant), inbound and outbound: scheduling, Iran-deal strategic analysis, forwarded TIME columns (“Ehud Barak: Iran Has Escaped a Noose,” April 2015), worry about the JCPOA, intra-thread “Touch Base J.” messages from ehbarak extending into late 2018.
• Bibi Netanyahu appears almost exclusively as press-clip subject matter — forwards from policy newsletters (Office of Terje Rod-Larsen / NUPI, AICE, JNS News). The single direct social datapoint is a 2014 photo forwarded by Jes Staley (then Barclays CEO, former JPMorgan executive who managed the Epstein relationship) titled “Photo from visit with Bibi Netanyahu.” Vacation photo, not policy.
• “Mossad” hits cluster on the Barak side, including a December 2018 thread from ehbarak to Epstein.
• “Mike Evans” hits are the wrong Mike Evans — a basketball coach connected to Lesley Groff’s son’s NCBA camps. Pastor Mike Evans of Friends of Zion is not in the corpus.
• “Sanhedrin” returns zero hits.
• “Christian Zionist” and “Friends of Zion” appear only as policy-newsletter mentions, never as theological-network correspondence.

The signal pattern is structurally consistent with the Cyrus frame and structurally inconsistent with the Epstein-as-Israeli-kompromat-broker frame:

• The Israeli-political vector that is documented in Epstein’s network sits at the secular-strategic-interest pole of Israeli politics (Barak — Labor, anti-Likud, anti-religious-right). That is the opposite pole from the Cyrus framework.
• The religious-right institutional vector that drives the Trump-as-Cyrus framing — Sanhedrin, Mikdash Educational Center, Friends of Zion / Mike Evans, the Temple Movement — is not in the corpus at all.

If you wanted to demonstrate that the alignment between Trump and Israeli religious-right policy outcomes ran through Epstein-brokered personal compromise on Bibi, the released emails are the place that demonstration would land. It does not land there. What the corpus does document is a different relationship entirely: Epstein and the Israeli Labor-side strategic class, talking Iran-deal pragmatism. That is a real receipt — for a different lever.

That delta is informative.

What changes if you adopt the right lever

The analytical payoff of dropping “Bibi has dirt on Trump” in favor of shared messianic-ideological framework is substantial.

It becomes testable. The Cyrus frame makes predictions: that the administration will continue to take steps interpretable as Temple-restoration adjacent, that it will frame Iran policy in apocalyptic-cosmic terms rather than narrow strategic-cost terms, that evangelical and Sanhedrin actors will issue real-time interpretive statements aligning with the frame. Each is checkable. Each can be falsified by counter-evidence. The blackmail frame, by design, cannot.

It moves the conversation onto on-axis ground. “Trump operates inside a documented theological framework whose other partners are Israeli religious-right institutions and American Christian Zionist infrastructure” is a sentence that survives primary-source scrutiny in court, in print, and in any serious foreign-policy review. “Bibi has dirt on Trump” survives in podcasts and not much else.

It strips out the ethno-essentialism. The actors are named, the institutions are named, the documents are public. Critique can attach to a coalition and a doctrine, rather than to an ethnicity or a folk-conspiracy archetype. That is both more accurate and more useful.

The harder question this opens up

If the right frame is shared theology rather than personal blackmail, then a series of follow-on questions become tractable:

• What share of US foreign policy in this region is determined by an evangelical-Christian-Zionist constituency that an elected administration is responding to at home, versus an Israeli-religious-right partnership that the same administration is responding to abroad? The two are usually conflated. They are distinguishable, and the policy implications differ.
• Who in the current US national-security apparatus operates explicitly inside the Cyrus frame, and who operates inside a more conventional strategic-interest frame? That delta is observable.
• What is the off-ramp, if there is one, for a doctrine that interprets foreign-policy decisions as prophetic obligations?

None of these questions are answerable inside the blackmail frame. All of them are answerable — or at least seriously approachable — inside the Cyrus frame.

Confidence ledger

• Cyrus / Isaiah 45 textual basis: high (foundational Tanakh).
• Sanhedrin Temple Coin (2018) as a real artifact with the framing described: very high (public statements, photographs, court statement).

• “Cyrus framework explains the alignment better than the kompromat framework”: high.
• “There is no personal-influence vector at all”: not claimed. The argument is about which lever is analytically primary, not about the empty set.

Bottom line

The question is not whether Benjamin Netanyahu has a folder. The question is whether a US administration is operating inside a documented messianic-political framework whose other partners are Israeli religious-right institutions and American Christian Zionist infrastructure — and openly celebrating the alignment on billboards in Tel Aviv.

The receipts go further than the rhetoric. The Epstein corpus — the place most people imagined the “Bibi has dirt on Trump” mechanism would land — documents a different Israeli relationship at the strategic-interest pole, and is silent on the religious-right one. The Cyrus infrastructure is loud, public, photographed, minted, and broadcast. The blackmail infrastructure isn’t in the corpus.

That is the on-axis question. It is the one with receipts. It is the one that travels.
